LA TOMATINA In Slow Motion

The origin of ‘La Tomatina’ dates back to 1945 when two youngsters from rival gangs got into a small skirmish and hurled tomatoes at each other. Over the following decades the dispute transformed into a local annual event loved by everyone. Today over 20,000 people assemble here from all over the world to experience the town’s quirky tradition.

During the tomato fight there’s a heady and boisterous atmosphere - an intoxicating mix of colour, mayhem and ecstatic celebration.

This series of images aim to PORTRAY this unique carnival ‘spirit’.

The photographer uses an impressionistic technique called ‘slow shutter photography’ which blurs and ‘paints’ the motion of the crowds - aiming to capture the energy and chaos of the revellers as they throw themselves into the throng and embrace their fate.
